Senior Editor, Heat Vision. King Spawn No. The Image Comics title from creator Todd McFarlane has sold , copies, a monster launch for the ongoing series that makes it the largest monthly title release of the past 25 years for Image. Comics sales are tracked by how many issues are purchased by retailers, who then sell them to customers. Cogliostro had a prominent role in the live-action movie in McFarlane had agreed that Gaiman was a co-creator of the characters and paid him royalties for reprints, graphic novels and action figures.
After a few years he ceased the payment of royalties and gave Gaiman notice that he owned all rights to the characters, citing the copyright notice from Issue 9 and claimed that Gaiman's work had been work-for-hire and that McFarlane was the sole owner. In , Gaiman filed suit against McFarlane and in response Todd counter-sued. The main goal was to determine the issue of ownership for another character Gaiman felt he had a stake in, Miracleman, which at the time McFarlane was believed to hold a sizeable stake in after his buyout of the assets of Eclipse Comics.
This issue was thrown out. Instead the court chose to rule on the breach of contract issue, the rights of ownership and the copyrightability of the characters from Issue 9. Several arguments were presented by McFarlane and all were rejected, leading to a sizeable judgement against McFarlane and Image Comics.
The matter went to appeal and the judgement was upheld in a decision. Gaiman's rights as co-creator and co-owner of Cog, Angela and Medieval Spawn were acknowledged.
The court's view was that Gaiman and McFarlane's collaboration led to each contributing half of the work. The fallout of this lawsuit is still unclear and the issue of Miracleman is yet to be resolved. In a recent reprint collection of the first twelve issues of Spawn, the contentious issue along with Issue 10 was excluded. Many issues of Spawn have been gathered together in various trade paperbacks. Spawn, Redeemer, Gunslinger, Medieval Spawn and She-Spawn begin the groups adventures, but McFarlane promises a rotating cast of heroes over the coming months to keep the roster of heroes fresh.
He also said that he will be bringing in new major villains into the fold, too. All of this just continued to build on the mythology of Spawn and his world. The original Spawn book is one of the world's bestselling and longest-running comics, with over million copies sold in more than countries. This is how big it is, that I'm contemplating it in my head.
And I'm not saying that it will launch to that -- but just like nobody knew what Spawn was going to be after a couple of issues, if I do my job right 10 years from now, there will be a dozen, if not dozens, of books and hundreds of characters. And this was the official beginning of that quest to see if it can be done again.
The idea of expanding Image's superhero universe isn't unique to McFarlane; just yesterday, the publisher announced that the Free Comic Book Day title coming out in May would be North Force 0, a reworked version of an upcoming issue of Savage Dragon that shines a spotlight on a number of other Image superheroes owned and written by Erik Larsen.
The goal is to create possibilities. And the possibilities aren't going to come unless you've got the characters and you've got the foundation All of it adds up to other companies and corporations, and eyeballs and fans looking at this brand and saying, 'What else you got? McFarlane has always had a big, complex world around Spawn -- heck, most of those variant Spawn characters are beings that launched out of the first couple of years of Spawn , along with dozens of others set in various different centuries throughout history.
The idea here is to take all of that to the next level. And within years, I'm hoping each one of those books multiplies into hundreds of new characters too. McFarlane notes, though, that the expansion of the universe -- and the expansion of the publishing line -- is something entirely new in a way that fans might not immediately realize, considering how expansive he has tried to make it feel in the past. But there's a difference between doing Medieval Spawn and Gunslinger Spawn What I haven't done in 28 years, almost three decades now, is a second monthly book," McFarlane said.
