However, when they first appeared there was an inherent hum. Even today, the louder you turn your amp up the more noise a single coil will emit. This was then further developed for electric guitars by Seth Lover of Gibson whilst Ray Butts from Gretsch was also working on a version. As noted above, humbucker pickups contain two single-coil pickups that are out of phase with each other. This cancels out the hum associated with single coils. Their high tolerance for hum and noise reducing capabilities, amongst other benefits, has seen the humbucker become favoured more with the likes of rock and metal guitarists.
Humbuckers are often seen on the guitars of heavy rock and metal players and associated with the likes of Gibson guitars. However, feature in a wide variety of guitars such as Gretsch and ESP for example.
However, they are by no means a one-trick pony as the likes of softer rock bands such as Band of Horses for example use Les Paul guitars to great effect. The sound of a humbucker is often described as thicker, heavier and fuller sounding. They often tend to lack the cutting or biting sound associated with single coils. There are even such things as mini humbuckers , which offer the power and punch of a humbucker in a delightfully compact form. Well you're in luck my friend. Thanks to brands like Fender, ESP and many more, you can switch between the cutting, chiming tones of a single coil, then throw yourself into a huge humbucking solo at the flick of a switch. This offers players far more versatility and a variety of different tones. When it comes to choosing humbucker vs single coil, you should always choose the one that you think sounds best.
A lot of beautiful instruments were hacked trying to achieve this. A safe bet would be to have guitars with all different types of pickups. I have a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender strat. I have come to the conclusion that old school pickups pick up nuance better than anything featuring modern technology.
Each design has also its drawbacks and hitting the sweet spot is difficult at times, especially when the choice has to be made quickly. Find your perfect pickup. By Nick Stoubis. What's a Pickup? He took a pair of single-coil pickups, mounted them side by side, reversed the polarity of one of the magnets, and connected the coils in series. So basically, humbuckers are doubled-up single-coil pickups with additional precautions against external sound.
Less outside interference. The way humbuckers are constructed is designed to muffle any outside sound vibrations that may be in the vicinity of your pickups in the same way that balancing an audio cable does. This means little to no distracting hum or distortion in the middle of your notes, which is great if the rest of your equipment is not great at handling that. Warmer sound. Jazz and heavy metal guitarists alike have embraced this deeper tone reach; the midrange emphasis on humbuckers make them good for non-distortion based effects like overdriving a tube amp.
Volume control. This also gives you a high output to adjust, and therefore more overall control of how you sound. Electric guitars typically have volume controls for each set of pickups — ones on the bridge, ones in the middle of your guitar body, ones near the neck position — but humbuckers give more range per volume change. And more range equals more control over the mix of inputs you can use. Since humbuckers keep out exterior interference, they let you hear the difference of their input tones more clearly than single coils.
That helps you get to know the combinations that work best with your own personal tastes. Less clarity of sound. The most effective way to know whether you should be using humbucker or single coil pickups is to try each in the performance conditions you use your guitar in most.
