The duties of and terms and conditions for part-time faculty shall be articulated in each letter of appointment. The general descriptions are as follows:. At the Medical Campus, Instructor is the entry level rank for those who have recently completed their post doctoral training, residency or fellowship training.
This rank is appropriate for new faculty, generally with M. Medical Campus individuals at the instructor level may be in positions of advanced training prior to leaving the institution or being promoted to the assistant professor rank.
All full-time Instructors are entitled under the by-laws of the University to attend and participate in the faculty meetings of their respective School or College. If authorized by the School or College faculty, they may have the right to vote. Assistant Professor : Generally, an assistant professor has been awarded a doctoral or professional degree or equivalent, exhibits commitment to teaching and scholarly or professional work of high caliber, and participates in University affairs at least at the department level.
Associate Professor : Generally, an associate professor meets the requirements for appointment as an assistant professor, enjoys a national reputation as a scholar or professional, shows a high degree of teaching proficiency and commitment, and demonstrates public, professional, or University service beyond the department.
Professor : Generally, a professor meets the requirements for appointment as an associate professor, and, in addition, has a distinguished record of accomplishment that leads to an international or, as appropriate, national reputation in his or her field. The standard professorial titles above and the title Instructor may be significantly modified by the use of prefixes, as follows:. The prefix Clinical identifies appointments that primarily provide practical instruction and application of practical knowledge.
On the Medical Campus, the title describes faculty whose primary activity is limited to clinical or public health practice and associated teaching. Other types of appointments Acting Acting appointments are considered temporary appointments requiring a doctoral degree or completion of training that meets board certification requirements.
Titles: Acting instructor Acting assistant professor Joint A joint appointment recognizes a faculty member's long-term commitment to, and participation in, two or more departments. Adjunct An adjunct appointment is made only to a faculty member including one in a research professorial rank already holding a primary appointment in another department. Affiliate The affiliate title recognizes the professional contribution of an individual whose principal employment responsibilities lie outside the colleges or schools of the University.
Emeritus The emeritus appointment is recommended by departmental action for a retired faculty member including research and clinical faculty whose scholarly, teaching or service record has been meritorious. See also " re-employment " Visiting Visiting faculty: A visiting faculty title assistant professor, associate professor, professor is given to persons who hold professorial positions at others institutions of higher learning and who are temporarily employed by the University. To earn an appointment to the Clinical faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine UPSOM , individuals must demonstrate service to the School of Medicine beyond clinical activities, including participation in education, scholarly activities, or meaningful and ongoing service to the UPSOM.
Examples of service activities include participation in departmental projects e. An individual is appointed initially at the rank of Clinical Instructor or Clinical Assistant Professor unless he or she has a record of significant teaching or service that would qualify for an appointment at an advanced level.
Clinical prefix faculty appointments are without University salary, benefits, or employment status. The instructor should have earned a doctoral degree or the highest appropriate professional degree. Initial appointment at the rank of Clinical instructor is appropriate for a faculty member who has completed post-graduate training but has no additional teaching experience.
The Clinical Assistant Professor should possess a medical, doctoral or other professional degree and have demonstrated teaching ability, or professional experience in the provision of service to the UPSOM. Certification by a relevant professional board or the equivalent is a usual expectation at this rank, although this qualification may be in progress at the time of appointment according to the requirements of the relevant professional board; exceptions for some internationally trained physicians may be granted by the Medical School.
Teaching: Quality of teaching is usually documented by objective teaching evaluations from the learner groups that are being taught medical students, residents, fellows, undergraduate and graduate students as well as peer education , letters, and awards. If the candidate comes from an outside institution, letters describing the teaching efforts and quality are required. Scholarship: An Assistant Professor should show progress toward becoming scholarly engaged in their field.
On the Clinical Track, publication of peer-reviewed articles in professional journals, book chapters, clinical guidelines and review articles are evidence of scholarly contributions. These contributions, along with invited presentations and abstracts, are usual features of faculty at this rank. Service: The candidate's organizational service, if present, to his or her department should be documented.
For faculty members with predominantly clinical effort, several years of postgraduate clinical experience post residency or post fellowship combined with excellent teaching evaluations may qualify for promotion or appointment at this level. Clinical work: As an Associate Professor on the clinical track, development as a clinician has progressed to the point of establishing broad interdepartmental and regional recognition by professional colleagues for clinical expertise.
This is usually documented in letters from colleagues and peers who attest to the clinical excellence. Appointment or promotion to this rank requires board certification or the equivalent although occasional exceptions for some internationally trained physicians may be granted by the Medical School.
