These qualities make your skateboard more maneuverable, providing a fantastic feeling of agility and freedom. Cruiser boards are best set up with traditional king-pin trucks , typically or mm, making them thinner than those on our ATV series.
We could have given this group of mini boards several different names, but we decided to call it the Cruiser Category because cruising is the style of riding they get used for the most. The Cruiser Category comes with soft wheels and adventurous vibes. Loads of performance jammed into a tiny package, our cruiser boards are some of the most fun and capable boards in our line-up.
Check it out! Longboards have a few noticeable differences from Cruiser Boards, mainly the longer deck and wheelbase but also they tend to lack a kicktail. Generally, because of these characteristics, you will spend most of your time with your feet positioned in between the trucks, which is ideal for that surfy feeling and really encourages you to make lots of carves.
When both of your feet are within the confines of your trucks, you no longer have the option of lifting your front wheels. This means that you are solely relying on your trucks to do your turning.
It often helps to visualize your line as early as possible so that you are less likely to have to adjust your course mid-turn. Because of this, the best trucks to use on your longboard are usually reverse kingpin with a width of between mm and mm and an angle of 50 or greater. Makes sense right!? Since they are larger, longboards are more comfortable and stable to ride than skateboards.
We can consider a board that is longer than 36 inches a longboard. Skaters use longboards for cruising, travelling and downhill racing. Since longboards have large wheels and trucks, they can also turn sharper and higher than normal skateboards. Moreover, longboards are ideal for travelling long distances and downhill. There are various types and styles of longboards on the market today. For example, downhill longboards, freestyle longboards, casual cruising longboards, etc.
In addition, swallowtails, pintails, flat-nose riders, drop-through decks, drop decks, etc. Since longboards are larger in size, they are not as responsive as standard skateboards and cruisers. The size of the board and wheels allow great speed, but its acceleration is slower compared to cruisers. Both of them are considered to be much safer and comfortable than skateboards. If you are into something more versatile and not interested in pure trick skating, opt for a longboard or a cruiser.
Moreover, a longboard and a cruiser can offer you multiple purposes of use, including different riding styles. For people who are fans of freestyling or dancing such as kickflips, technical sliding, or cross-stepping, a large and wide type of longboard can cater to your needs.
In terms of riding downhill, carving, and cruising, longboards and cruisers can also meet your requirements. Since you have understood the definition of a longboard and a cruiser, let us tell you about the differences of these kinds of boards. While a bigger longboard has wider turning arcs, shorter ones make it easier for you to avoid obstacles and cracks. On the contrary, a longboard typically has its decks from 33 inches to 59 inches long and 8.
Some longboards are as long as surfboards. Therefore, some decks can offer comfort when riding on rough terrain and ease on the joints. Cruisers have a stiffer deck so that you can use more pop when performing tricks. Both longboards and cruisers have a wide variety of shapes. A full-size longboard often focuses on symmetrical cutout shaped or pintail shaped.
For those who love to dance or freestyle on the boards, manufacturers also offer longboards with kick tails. Unlike longboards, several cruisers have the shape of surfboards, which are asymmetrical with a rounded square tail in the rear, and a sharp nose in the front. They usually have a kicktail, allowing skaters to perform manuals, kick tricks, and hopping over small cracks.
For mini cruisers, their shape resembles traditional skateboards. While cruising around the street, you can do some soft tricks, including hopping on or off curbs, kick turns, and kickflips as cruisers can help you navigate the city landscape easier. Although cruisers and longboards share some similarities in trucks all consist of bushings, baseplates, hangars, and kingpins , there is a significant difference in their construction.
Most cruisers use traditional kingpin trucks, while ordinary longboards have reverse kingpin trucks. Traditional kingpin trucks help cruisers respond well to small foot movements suitable for kicks riding at a slower speed. They are shorter than the reversed trucks so that it would be easier for you to push forward.
With reverse ones, they allow for more maneuverability. They are designed to handle deeper and slower movements and are very stable. You may need to lean harder if you want to turn. In contrast, traditional trucks are more prone to wobble. The bushings are also different from each other.
Longboard trucks have softer bushings, allowing them to carve and turn at ease. However, longboards may need stiffer bushings to keep you stable at high speeds when it comes to downhill riding. One disadvantage of reverse kingpin trucks is that you can hardly perform technical tricks.
Moving through the city, navigating around things and people on sidewalks and busy streets. Full-size longboards, on the other hand, are heavier and bulkier.
But: they are stable and smooth riding over longer distances and at higher speeds, like on country roads. They generally allow for more efficient and effortless pushing. Because of their size and weight, they can pick up speed quick and go fast. They also handle higher speeds well, which makes them a good choice for riding downhill. The Landyachtz Dinghy, a very popular cruiser read my full review here , has a deck size of Why is it important?
Bigger longboards have much wider turning arcs. On the flip side, a cruiser is often much less stable than a full-sized longboard, particularly at higher speed.
The short wheelbase, combined with loose trucks see below often leads to speed wobbles when going down steep hills.
Longboards are much more stable at speed due to their longer wheelbase. Flex varies a lot for longboards in general, but some flex helps makes cruising more comfortable om rough terrain, easier on the joins, and helps with carving.
Cruisers often have a stiffer deck to allow for more pop when using the kicks. They often have a kick tail — and sometimes a small nose kick — for doing kick tricks and manuals, and popping over small cracks.
So while some riders are able to ollie on them, it takes more effort. Again, the main focus of a cruiser is, well, cruising, so the kick tails are mainly there to help you navigate the urban landscape with ease. Some cruisers, nevertheless, are designed with more freestyling in mind than others.
A good example is the Loaded Poke, a cruiser with prominent freestyle features like its two full-sized kicks and a pronounced concave. Go here for my complete review of the Poke. Meanwhile, full-size longboards come in varied shapes, but many longboards focusing on cruising are either pintail shaped first image below or symmetrical cutout shaped second image.
See this post for more about the different longboard shapes. Longboards may also have kick tails to enable some freestyle or dancing tricks. A cruiser typically has a narrower nose and wheel flares to reduce the risk of wheel rub. Cruiser trucks are generally very loose for fast turning, so having good wheel clearance is essential for tight carving when riding in small spaces. For regular longboards, both topmount and drop-through, wheel clearance can vary quite a lot.
Some longboards are meant primarily for distance pushing , focusing on riding fast and far on straight roads, as opposed to continuously carving and turning, and so they have more limited wheel clearance. Others, like the Loaded Icarus, are made essentially for carving and pumping and can take very large wheels without suffering wheelbite thanks to their ample wheel cutouts and deep flares.
Check out my full review of the Icarus. Most mini-cruisers are topmount , meaning the trucks are bolted underneath the deck. This means cruisers are relatively high off the ground, making them harder to push on — your kicking foot has to drop more to reach the ground, your standing knee has to bend more. Top mount also means less stability at speed because of higher center of gravity. Cruisers are generally not the best choice for downhill speed.
